| Inhalt | This seminar explores the relationship between urbanization and the transformation of the countryside from a historical and theoretical perspective. Conventional wisdom has it that in the last two centuries the rural world has been eaten up by the urban, a process that has turned the world into one great interior. This view obscures the underlying global transformations of land and territory that define the course of urbanization. Urban growth is not only an economic and social process, but also an epistemological and political project, in which the countryside is of fundamental importance, not only for its economic production, but for its symbolic and representational functions. This reading-intensive seminar explores historical processes and projects that include the enclosure movement, settler colonialism, land reform, the rationalization of agriculture, migration and its management, internal colonization, social engineering and economic planning, resource conflicts, and the politics of nation-building. Its geographic focus extends from Europe, Africa, and South-East Asia, to the Americas. Readings draws from social and environmental history, the history of science and technology, architectural history and theory, urban studies, and media theory. Particular attention will be paid to the role of aesthetics and representation in the historical relationship between city, state, and countryside. |
