| Inhalt | The Swahili Coast in East Africa extends a thousand miles from Somalia in the north to Mozambique in the south. For Anthropology and African Studies, this area is of particular interest because it represents an important aspect of Africa’s relationship with the world. Over the past millennium, the Swahili developed into distinctive urban, mercantile, cosmopolitan communities through their intermediary position between their mainland neighbors and traders, religions and colonial forces from Asia, Arabia and Europe. The seminar examines the manifold ways in which Swahili urbanism played an important role in making Africa a part of the international economy. It also explores diverse and changing forms of Swahili urbanism, for instance in the three ancient ‘city states’ Kilwa, Zanzibar and Lamu – now designated as world heritage sites - as compared to the modern port cities of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. What are concrete manifestations of these diverse and changing forms of Swahili urbanism, for instance in the aesthetics of architecture, cuisine, fashion, music and poetry? And which forces have shaped and continue to shape ways of ‘living the city’, creating shifting boundaries between people and affecting their sociality? The seminar will also address methodological questions which are brought into focus by studying city life and urbanisms on the Swahili Coast. |
