48487-01 - Seminar: Performing the City 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Marie-Laure Allain Bonilla (m.allainbonilla@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt From two of the most important contributions (see: Readings) that marked the growing interest of artists for their urban environment and reality, this seminar will look at different kind of artistic proposals which are aiming at bringing a critical perspective on the urban everyday life. Analyzing architectural and urban environment, people displacements, habits and uses in/of the city, artists reveal patterns, typologies but also social inequalities that they translate into a visual synthesis.

This seminar will also address a wide range of possible artistic interventions and responses to the city (be it the building environment or the urban life) by looking at street art, public art, site-specific art or performance art, just to name a few. We will see how artists use the city as a stage where their art can be expressed, not only to produce an art accessible to everyone in a democratic gesture, but also to draw attention on sociopolitical issues and inequalities by reaching a wider audience and making a public statement, outside of the artist studio, the art gallery or the museum.
