48677-01 - Forschungsseminar: Pragmatics of fiction 4 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt In this course on the research of pragmatics and fiction, we will explore a linguistics approach to fiction (written and telecinematic). Drawing on the recently published handbook (Locher/Jucker, eds. 2017), we will give center stage to fictional language which allows scholars to review key concepts in sociolinguistics such as genre, style, voice, stance, dialogue, participation structure or features of orality and literariness. We will explore language as one of the creative tools to craft story worlds and characters by drawing on concepts such as regional, social and ethnic language variation, as well as multilingualism. Themes such as emotion or impoliteness in fiction receive attention just as the challenges of translation and dubbing, the creation of past and future languages, the impact of fictional language on language change or the fuzzy boundaries of narratives. Students will work on data of their own choice from a number of methodological and theoretical angles. They will develop research questions and work on sharpening analytical tools. The program will be jointly put together at the beginning of term with the aim to gain experience in analyzing a variety of different texts and to account for the interests of the participants.
Lernziele At the end of this course students have gained knowledge on the different research strands within the pragmatics of fiction. They will have applied this knowledge to a research project of their own.
