| Inhalt | Decription Field Class southern England This five-day field trip is designed to offer a flavour of the physical geography of southern England. Due to the proximity of the region to the sea, coastal geomorphology, coastal erosion and the management of coastal areas in sensitive landscapes will feature prominently throughout the trip. However, a wide range of other topics will be covered, including the geology and geomorphology of Ladram Bay (see image above), the palaeontology of Lyme Bay and the land management of the South Downs National Park (SDNP). If time permits, we will also cover aspects of local history, sustainability, and explore links between English Literature, landscape and the environment. Programme (provisional) Day 1 - AM: Meet Lewes train station (ca. 10:00 hrs.) - drive west (ca. 300 km – 4 ½ hrs.). - Late PM: Dartmoor National Park (DNP) – geology & geomorphology of Dartmoor, weathering of granite tors (including short walk), archaeology, land use & landscapes as settings for well-known English literature. Day 2 - AM: Drive over Exmoor National Park (ENP) to Lynmouth, on North Devon coast – issue of flooding in 1952 – flood alleviation strategies; walk / lunch in the Valley of Rocks. - PM: River Taw, north Devon – Floodplain sediment connectivity and issue of invasive plants on river system dynamics – evening walk around Exeter town centre. Day 3 - AM: East Devon – Ladram Bay (see image above) – geology and coastal geomorphology – opportunity to swim (weather / temperature permitting). - PM: West Dorset – geology and stratigraphy of Lyme Bay Jurassic coast and UNESCO World Heritage Site – fossil-bearing rocks, Mary Anning - founder of Palaeontology. Fossil hunting on Charmouth Beach (tide permitting) followed by an evening beach BBQ (weather permitting). Day 4 - AM: Birling Gap – Earth surface processes & palaeo dry-valley formation and links with coastal geomorphology, cliff erosion & the issue of defending against erosion or not. - PM: Cuckmere Haven– maintaining coastal sea defences or implementing sustainable strategy of ‘managed realignment’. Day 5 - AM: The geomorphology and management of the South Downs National Park (SDNP), followed by a walk around historic town of Lewes, East Sussex. Discuss aspects of local history, as well as flooding, avalanches and sustainability, including the Lewes Pound and Transition Town Lewes. Finish off by sampling the local beer in one of the friendly hostelries (i.e. a pub). - PM: Return to Gatwick Airport, 16:30 hrs. (at the latest). Trip ends. 1.
