50203-01 - Vorlesung: Religion and Sustainability 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2018

Dozierende Jens Köhrsen (jens.koehrsen@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Western societies are currently struggling to evolve and implement more environmentally sustainable forms of living. Religion can constitute a crucial factor in the ongoing transition processes towards more sustainable societies (sustainability transitions): Even under the supposed secularization process, religion continues to inform the lives of vast population segments. In many societies, religious organizations and actors are held in high esteem and constitute important public actors. Against the backdrop of climate change, some religious groups have adopted proactive positions in the public sphere while others intensified their previous engagement, as prominently illustrated by Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home”. On the other hand, religious worldviews can also promote climate change scepticism, thereby blocking sustainability transitions.
The lecture series addresses the involvement of religion in sustainability transitions processes by studying the “greening” of different faith traditions and the transitions activities of religious organizations. Various experts will contribute to this lecture with insights from their research and their activities in the field of religion and sustainability.

Lectures will be held in English. Questions and exams can be taken in English, French, and German
