50204-01 - Seminar: Philosophy of Economics and Finance 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2018
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Jacob Bjorheim (jacob.bjorheim@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Many believe that philosophy and economics are two completely different disciplines; economics is stereotyped as a science that deals with facts, data and evidence often expressed in figures, equations and numbers while philosophy is a faculty belonging to the humanities dealing with ideas and beliefs. However, like many of the social sciences, economics grew out of philosophy, and the concerns of economists continue to intersect with those of philosophers. Indeed, many historical economists also had a strong philosophical background: Adam Smith, David Hume, John Stuart Mill, Karl Marx, William Stanley Jevons, and to some extent John Maynard Keynes.
Today, economics, but also finance, give philosophers of science an interesting and versatile breeding-ground for philosophical reflections. Reflections on the foundation of economics fall into three broad categories: the theoretical, the methodological, and the ethical. Under the heading "Philosophy of Economics" (PoE) The focus of this one-semester course is, predominantly, on the methods that economists apply in developing their theories and models. For that we review both historical and more recent sources.
Lernziele The purpose of the course is to expose social science students to (a) the philosophical foundations of economics and, (b) the methods economists use to explain economics. In particular, the students will be able to identify how philosophers of science think about economics, what the main questions are and which positions are taken.
Literatur The philosophy of science literature is large and growing. However, a few central texts and collections offer PoS students a reasonable access to the subject matter. Four good references are:
Hausman, Daniel M. (2012): "Philosophy of Economics". Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy
Maeki, Uskali (Ed.) (2012): Handbook of the Philosophy of Science Volume 13 - Philosophy of Economics. Amsterdam, Elsevier.
Reiss, Julian (2013): Philosophy of Economics. Routledge, New York and London.
Ross, Don and H. Kinkaid (Eds.) (2009): The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Economics. Oxford University Press.
Students should familiarize themselves with the shorter Hausman contribution. Reiss offers a textbook on PoE, while Maeki as well as Ross and Kinkaid present a collection of scientific PoE relevant papers. During the course, we will mainly gain exposure to academic papers published in leading economic and philosophy journals. Some of these papers are sourced from the Maeki as well as from Ross and Kinkaid. This format enables us to highlight classic and contemporary thinking. The students will benefit, not only, from engaging with the original literature and research, but also from analysing the structure of a published academic paper, its main premises and assumptions, the flow of arguments, and how its main conclusion relate to their own views.

Teilnahmebedingungen The course is part of the voluntary master-curriculum for social science students at the University. Students from all such areas will benefit from having taken entry-level courses related to Economics and/or Philosophy.
