50211-01 - Seminar: Borders in the Making of the Modern Near East 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2018
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Alexander Erich Balistreri (alexander.balistreri@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt A great deal of discussion about the challenges facing the people of the Near East today hinges on the issue of borders. Arbitrary borders are blamed for many of the region’s woes, and a redrawing of these borders is sometimes put forward as an appropriate solution. But extant states are equally worried about the implications of such proposals for their own territorial integrity -- to speak nothing of the impossibility of redrawing borders in an objectively fair way. Boundaries are not simply lines on a map; they mark the recognized limit of state territorial sovereignty and are thus the object of intense contestation as well as the target of changing administrative practices.

States, of course, are not the only actors concerned with borders. Populations that live near borders experıence a daily administrative burden. Ethnic groups that straddle borders face the question of self-determination. Smugglers seek ways of getting around borders. And borders are often the object of nationalist desire, even for those who live far away from them.

In this seminar, we will examine theories and practices of borders and territorial sovereignty before moving on to a detailed examination of case studies in the modern Near East. Cases examined will include: the proposed divisions of the Near East during and after World War I, the division of the Balkans during the Balkan Wars, the mandates of Syria and Iraq, the "Hatay Question“ and the "Mosul Question“, the "ruler-edge“ borders between Lybia and Egypt and around Jordan, among others.

Over the course of the semester, students will contribute to the preparation of a sourcebook on the history and implementation of various border regimes around the region.

NB. This seminar will be conducted in ENGLISH.
Lernziele Students will:
-- become acquainted with the differences in terminology used in the study of borders and with the prevailing empirical and theoretical approaches to border studies.
-- follow the broader political history of the modern Near East from the perspective of contestation over borders and territorial sovereignty.
-- gain a deeper understanding of the history and administration of specific border regimes in the Near East and use this understanding in their own written analysis.
Literatur Eine ausführliche Literaturliste wird in der ersten Sitzung ausgehändigt.
