| Inhalt | Without a doubt, Social Theory shapes research projects, methodologies and interpretations in the social sciences. Conversely, theories are challenged and nuanced by research projects. This seminar will offer students the opportunity to read one of the most influential ideas in current anthropological debates and get familiar with others works presented by peers. Exploring how these theories and ideas are influencing anthropological knowledge will be the central purpose of the seminar. The seminar is organized around key debates such as conceptualizing agency, identity, modernity, globalization and neoliberalism. But before exploring these debates, a few introductory reading sessions will engage the students to reflect critically on the roles theories have in the production of knowledge and "truth" in the social sciences. In addition to getting familiarized with fundamental theses and theoretical debates, this seminar aims to reflect on the context of emergence of these theories and the posture they imply for the researchers vis-à-vis toward society. |
| Lernziele | Social theories are framing the debates in every discipline. This seminar provides the occasion to read and discuss some famous contemporary social theory texts about core ideas such as identity, power, agency, and change. |
| Literatur | A references list will be distributed at the beginning of the semester and the core texts will be online on ADAM. A couple of documentaries will be shown and discussed in the classroom during the semester. |
| Bemerkungen | Laptop and mobile devices can be used in class only for the purpose of the course. Other uses (messaging, emails, browsing, games, etc.) are not acceptable as they affect learning and participation in class and can distract others. |
| Teilnahmebedingungen | Grundstudium abgeschlossen. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist aus Gründen der Qualitätssicherung der Lehre auf 20 beschränkt. Die Teilnehmenden werden nach Fachrichtung, Studiengang und in der Reihenfolge ihrer Anmeldung auf die Liste gesetzt. Wer im Rahmen von Auslandaufenthalten und von Austauschprogrammen in Basel studiert wird unabhängig vom Listenplatz immer aufgenommen. |
| Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung | Inscription through MONA, questions can be forwarded to david.bozzini@unibas.ch Lehrveranstaltungen mit beschränkter Teilnehmerzahl können ab 01.08.2018 bis 01.09.2018 über MOnA belegt werden. Die Zuteilung erfolgt durch die Dozierenden. Bis 10.09.2018 erhalten alle definitiv aufgenommenen Studierenden eine Bestätigungsmail des Dozierenden. Wer an der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung dennoch unentschuldigt fehlt, wird von der Liste gestrichen. In der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung oder per Mail in der Woche der ersten Sitzung erfahren Studierende auf einer Warteposition, ob sie doch teilnehmen können. |
