Inhalt | This course discusses the migration-public policy nexus by showing that there are important connections between migration and transformations in public policy. Despite the many evident opportunities international migration brings along, it is also the fact that living in a diverse community poses challenges in terms of organizing health-care, housing or education. The course will address social implications of diverse societies within these main areas. How do social welfare providers respond to new challenges of people not staying put in one place? And how do they deal with unprecedented demographic heterogeneity? Concerns about the ability of welfare delivery systems to cope with such diversity of needs have been raised in political discussions as well as in academic circles. Studies have shown that welfare providers are struggling to understand and meet new migrant needs. There are political questions raised about the provision of culturally appropriate services, such as for example specific needs of women with female genital mutilation. Practical questions of where, when and who to vaccinate also shows that public policies can no longer be organized within national borders. Models of health-care provision need to take into account the new reality of diverse population but to also consider what is politically acceptable and meets the needs of all. We will also pose questions related to challenges and opportunities arising with multicultural education. What issues arise when students come together from a wide variety of social, economic, or linguistic backgrounds? How have globalization and migration transformed educations systems in different countries? We will try to understand how education systems reinforce or change existing social inequalities, and how policy choices affect the lives of children, parents and teachers. In addition to learning about the global context of health and education policies from academic study, students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on practice, right here in Basel. With the curriculum of Master programme focused on changing societies, this seminar will help students understand how global challenges manifest themselves locally. The course lasts for seven weeks and for approximately an hour each week, students will engage in a local community project and organize conversation hours for newcomers in either English or German. They can engage in an activity in one of the meeting places for migrants in Basel or in conversation practices with an individual person. In each of these settings, students will be able to connect their academic knowledge to real-life practice and also learn more about their community. |
