Inhalt • A lecture-seminar-workshop format will be used.
• Some qualitative analytical procedures will be practiced with provided interview data.
• Number of advanced analytical procedures will be introduced and their appropriateness relative to the various research designs will be discussed.
• Examples will be introduced that show the unique design features to be considered in the planning and stages of a study so that specific methods can be employed during the analysis.
• The course readings build on basic texts used in the first semester courses and include more advanced readings and exercises.
• This is not a statistics course.
Lernziele The course "research methods II" introduces the students to advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods and builds on the first semester course (“research methods I” and its literature). The general objectives of the course are to enhance student's research skills relevant for APNs and novice researchers, such as establishing evidence based practice by critically appraise scientific evidence and assisting/ conducting research projects.
The students:
• Understand potentials and challenges of different qualitative approaches in producing clinically relevant qualitative findings and are able to compare these approaches.
• Know the procedure of qualitative data analysis and practice first steps of thematic analyis.
• Develop a beginning understanding on how software programs support qualitative data analysis.
• Reflect on ethical considerations and application of credibility criteria within the qualitative research process.
• Develop a common understanding of research terminology.
• Compare and contrast various research methods to identify their strengths, limitations, and appropriateness to answer the research question(s).
• Reviewing quantitative studies
• Understand diagnostic testing principles, basic principles of validity and reliability in measurement, as well as the different phases of data collection and data management processes.
• Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of different measurement methods.
• Propose strategies for enhancing the strength of various quantitative research methods: designs, sampling methods, measurement, and data collection.
Literatur Note: The course parts on qualitative analysis build on “Forschungsmethoden I”, in particular Interpretive Description (ID) by Thorne (2016), chapters 1-12 + 14. Students are expected to be familiar with ID and its principles prior to the course.
