Inhalt Case studies are used in academia in two contrasting ways: as an illustrative, situated case that is used to teach and debate relevant concepts, ideas, theories, conflicts, and solutions to problems on the one hand, or as a social science research approach on the other. The former is well established in business studies, while the latter is popular in most social and related sciences. In this seminar, we will introduce case studies as a research framework. Topics to be covered include types of case studies, scope of case studies, justifications and critiques of case studies, ethical considerations, field research and case studies, and case studies as part of a multimethod research approach. The first part of each session will consist of an overview of a designated topic, the second will present a case study that exemplifies aspects that were discussed in the first part of each session. Substantively, the cases to be discussed in each session relate to sustainability from a social science perspective.
Lernziele • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of a case study
• Differentiate between types of case studies and their fields of application
• Be aware of opportunities and limitations of case studies in scientific research
