| Inhalt | We will explore the linkages between US-led philanthropic foundation initiatives and the development of the educational landscape. The Carnegie, Ford and Rockefeller institutes will receive particular attention. During the first half of the semester, we will examine the historical relationships between these foundations and the poor and specifically the African-American poor between the 1890s and the 1920s. During the second half of the semester, the global connections between the "third sector" and the educational landscape in Africa between 1900 and 1940 will be investigated, via the specific case study of the Phelp-Stokes Fund in Liberia. |
