55731-01 - Seminar: Migration, Mobility and Change: Debating Key Issues 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Katrin Sontag (katrin.sontag@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The proposed course sheds light on current dimensions of environmental, political, and social transformations from the perspective of migration. It provides insights into current concepts, methods and fields of migration and mobility studies in the social sciences and critically addresses 6 dominant topics in current discourses on migration: migration and climate change; migration, integration and social cohesion; migration and development; migration, borders and boundaries; migration and citizenship; migration and nationalism. Case studies, theoretical contributions, discourse-critical perspectives, as well as public media products will be discussed.
The question of sustainability and sustainable environmental, social, economic, and political development plays a role in all six topics and the topics will be discussed also from this perspective. In addition, the course seeks to transfer the topics into practical experience and vice versa in the frame of service learning. Students will chose an NGO or association that deals with one of the topics and carry out a small project for them.
In the second part of the seminar, participants will present their projects in class and critically reflect on their service learning experience.

The course thus consists of three parts: 1/3 of the allotted time will be presence in class, 1/3 preparation and 1/3 project work (around 30 hours each).
Student assignments:
In the first part of the seminar, participants will chose one topic and prepare a small workshop for the group.
Parallel to the seminar, students will carry out a service learning project.
In the second half of the seminar, students will prepare a poster that can be publishd on the IMPULS webpage and present their projects in class (see below).
Support with workshop formats, presentations and poster creation will be provided.
Parallel to the seminar, students have the possibility to participate in a range of valuable supportive activities and events that are organized by IMPULS, such as mentoring, project management or an SDG workshop in Geneva (see below for more information).
Bemerkungen This seminar is supported by "IMPULS - Facilitating Service Learning for Sustainability". IMPULS supports lecturers and students, who carry out projects with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their seminars. The support includes a financial grant, but also mentoring for the student projects, and a SDG workshop at the UNO in Geneva.
