Lernziele This course introduces students to the economics of health and healthcare. It considers conceptual and methodological issues of economic evaluations in relation to healthcare programs and how to measure costs and effects, as well as the review of such studies. In the current climate of burgeoning healthcare costs, the course aims to familiarise students with basic principles of economics and economic evaluations of healthcare technologies. Every lecture will incorporate examples that illustrate fundamental health economic problems.

Upon completion of the course, students will:
1. Have a broad understanding of health and healthcare from an economic viewpoint, and understand how healthcare markets differ from other markets.
2. Recognise the importance of choice and scarcity in economics, and understand the role of opportunity costs and efficiency in healthcare.
3. Understand the Swiss healthcare system and the basic economic mechanisms principles behind it.
4. Understand economic evaluations in relation to healthcare programs and how to measure costs and effects, and identify study types used in economic evaluations.
5. Critically appraise a health economic study using guidelines and checklists for the assessment of published health economic evaluations.
6. Develop an understanding of rational choice and priority setting using economic evaluation, and understand the importance of healthcare technology assessments in different countries.
7. Understand the importance of collecting information alongside clinical trials, and identify the differences between economic evaluations alongside clinical trials and models (combinations of epidemiological and economic data) in economic research.
