52084-01 - Kurs: Introduction to EU Law 6 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2020
Angebotsmuster Jedes Semester
Dozierende Sebastian Meyer (sebastian.meyer@unibas.ch)
Christa Tobler (christa.tobler@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Important: This is a flipped classroom course with elements of blended learning! See below, under "Bemerkungen".

The course provides an introduction into the basics of European Union law, including notably:
1) The origins of the European Union;
2) Its consitutional principles;
3) The special nature of European Union law as compared to more traditional public international law;
4) The particular role of the European Court of Justice for the legal system of the European Union;
5) The European Union's internal market and competition law.

The course will also touch on recent or on-going developments, such as Brexit.
Lernziele Students understand the basics of European Union law.
Students are able to place news items related to the European Union in the framework of what they learn in the course, and they are to reflect critically on them.
Literatur Christa Tobler/Jacques Beglinger, Essential EU Law in Charts and Text, 2 volumes, 5th, "post-Brexit" edition, Budapest: HVG-Orac 2020 (www.eur-charts.eu).

Note: in most class meetings, we will work actively with the charts. There is a companion text to the charts which is intended to put some flesh around the Charts, by linking them to each other through text.

A certain number of these books will be made available to the students in the "Semesterapparat" in the library of the Europainstitut/Institute for European Global Studies, but it may be easier to have a private copy.

For those who wish to buy the Chart and Text books: The books can be ordered online directly from the HVG-ORAC publishing house, either via the website (https://hvgorac.eu/products-page/books-category/essential-eu-law-in-charts/) or through an e-mail direclty to Ms Csilla Viragh of the HVG-ORAC publishing house (Viragh.Csilla@hvgorac.hu, indicating “ISBN 978-963-258-491-1 combo/kereskedelmi csomag”).

Note, however, that according to the new list of shipping or delivery costs of 2020, it is very expensive to have the books delivered by HVG-Orac to Switzerland (but considerably less so to Germany and France). For orders from Switzerland, a less costly alternative is the Librarie Européenne in Brussels (https://www.libeurop.eu/shop?search=tobler&search_scope=0).

A limited number of copies of the books will also available fbe rom your professor - send an e-mail message to Sebastian Meyer (sebastian.meyer@unibas.ch) if you wish to buy the book in this manner.
Bemerkungen Important: This is a flipped classroom course with elements of blended learning!

After an introduction, students learn themselves with the help of the text books (Tobler/Beglinger, Essential EU Law in Charts and Text, 2 volumes - see under "Literatur"). Students meet regularly with the assistant to the course to discuss questions they may have on the topic and to do exercises. At crucial points in the course, meetings will be held with the professor. Both the assistant and the professor are available for online discussions throughout the course.

In the framework of the flipped classroom/blended learning approach, it is important that, before coming to class, students have done the preparatory work. Accordingly, they should look up on ADAM what needs to be done even before the very first meeting (!) and prepare accordingly.

Studierende, die zu Semesterbeginn noch nicht eingeschrieben sind, werden gebeten, sich an die Studienkoordination des Europainstitutes (master-eib@unibas.ch) zu wenden.
