58579-01 - Seminar: The Politics of Healthcare Research in the Genomic Age 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2020
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Henri-Michel Yéré (h.yere@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This class seeks to unpack the ways in which genomic research has risen to become a central field in contemporary healthcare research. We will do so by unpacking some of the new approaches to medication (such as ‘personalised medicine’ and its complicated relationship to ethnicity.) We will interrogate the extent to which the ‘biologisation’ of ethnic difference has come to question the long-standing engagement of anthropology and sociology with the question of ethnicity. We will see how some of the arguments developed in the field of genomic research may have been enlisted in the current wave of ‘race science’ revivalism. We will see whether natural science research is sufficiently equipped from an ethical standpoint to face the challenges that are coming in the wake of what many consider as a scientific revolution under way.
Lernziele Create connections between the sociology of knowledge and the current developments in healthcare research

Engage with the political and social aspects of health sciences
