58924-01 - Seminar: Influential ideas in Statistics 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2020
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Giusi Moffa (giusi.moffa@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt During this seminar we will critically read and discuss a selection of papers with influential ideas in statistics. The focus may be on classic papers with established important work for the statistical and scientific literature, as well as on more recent articles with high potential.

Active participations is expected from all students during all lectures. Each week one (or two) student will give a presentation about a research paper; one (or two) will take the lead in asking questions and moderating the discussion, one (or two) will provide critical and constructive feedback. Therefore each student should play a special role on at least 3 occasions (presenting, moderating, giving feedback).

Rough format: ~50 minutes presentation, and ~40 minutes class discussion, with a ~15 minutes break in between.

After their presentation, students should also write up a short report with lecture notes providing a synopsis of the paper and highlights from the subsequent discussion, to be submitted (via e-mail to the lecturer/assistant) within one week of their session.

Rough format: overview of the paper and its relevance, specific examples or a small simulation study where appropriate, comprehensive recap of the points raised during the class discussion and the feedback from peers. Aim for 4-10 pages.
Lernziele * Independent study of research papers.
* Prepare and give a scientific presentation.
* Communicating and discussing scientific ideas.
* Structuring and writing technical reports.
Literatur A list of selected papers from the statistical literature will be available 1 week before the course starts.
Bemerkungen Before the semester starts students will receive a list of possible papers to choose from, and we will ask them to indicate their interest so that we can use their preference to guide the assignment wherever possible.

The instructor will give an introductory lecture during the first class, on Thursday September 17th. The assignment of topics will be finalised by the first semester week. The first student presentation will be on October 1st, and we can take advantage of the lecture on September 24th to go over any general aspects about the seminar, software which may be useful for the presentation and the report, and any other open questions students may have. The assistant will be available to meet students at least once before their session, to answer any questions about the topic and provide feedback on their planned presentation.

Teilnahmebedingungen There are no formal requirements. However a basic understanding of linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, and some programming experience may be helpful.
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung The number of participants is limited to 20. The places will be allocated after receipt of the registration on MOnA. Registration via mail is no longer necessary. The registrations will be checked at the end of each month. If the seminar is fully booked, you will be informed at the beginning of September at the latest.
