58984-01 - Seminar: Women and War: Gender, Race and the Politics of Militarism 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2020
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Elizabeth Mesok (elizabeth.mesok@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course examines scholarship on gender, sexuality, and race within a multitude of feminist disciplines in order to suggest productive interventions in analyses of women and militarism. Refuting essentialized notions of womanhood as passive, peaceful, and submissive, this class encourages students to move beyond thinking about what women and men do in war, and instead consider how gender and race are constructs that are instrumental in, and constituted by, processes of militarism. In the Part I of the course, students will be introduced to feminist security studies and feminist international relations theory; transnational, decolonial, and antimilitarist feminist theory; and feminist ethnographic approaches to the study of war and militarism. These interdisciplinary methods will set the stage for the discussions for the rest of the semester. Part II of the course will exam topics related to gender, race, and war, whereas Part III will focus on gender, race, and security, with an understanding that such a clean distinction between war and security is never fully possible. Topics covered will include women as agents of violence, masculinities, sexual violence, the deployment of humanitarian and feminist discourse for militarism, the ‘global war on terror,’ and the newly emergent Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism agenda. This course is not an exhaustive examination of the topic, but rather will offer students the chance to employ various feminist methodologies in order to think critically about topics related to gender, race, and militarism.
