39716-01 - Exkursion: Physiogeographie Mitteleuropas 3 KP

Inhalt This seven-day field trip is designed to offer a flavour of the geography of southern England. Due to its immediate proximity to the sea, coastal geomorphology, coastal erosion and the management of coastal areas, many in environmentally sensitive locations, will feature prominently throughout the trip. In addition, a wide range of other topics will be covered during the trip, including the geomorphology and management of Dartmoor & the South Downs National Parks, the geology and palaeontology of Lyme Bay, as well as relevant / interesting local history, flood defence and sustainability issues over the course of the week.
Programme (schedule is provisional and may change, subject to time, COVID-19 rules, weather, tide-times, etc.)
Day 1: Monday 21th June
- AM (ca. 10:00): Meet Lewes train station, East Sussex – ca. 3 ½ hour drive to east Devon (Youth Hostel located at Beer Village, east Devon).
- PM: west Dorset – geology and stratigraphy of Lyme Bay Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site – fossil-bearing rocks, Mary Anning founder of Palaeontology. Fossil hunting on Charmouth Beach & evening BBQ (tidal status & weather permitting).
Day 2: Tuesday 22th June
- AM/PM: Drive to north Devon coastal town of Lynmouth, scene of Britain’s worst flood in 1952, and subsequent flood prevention/urban redesign strategies.
- PM: Valley of Rocks & Wringclifffe Beach, explore possible dry valley formation scenarios. River Taw floodplain and effects of invasive plant (Impatiens glandulifera) on fluvial sedimentation dynamics (hay fever suffers may need to take preventative medicine).
Day 3: Wednesday 23th June
- AM: Ladram Bay, rock/beach formation.
- Dartmoor National Park (DNP) – geology & geomorphology, weathering granite tors (short walk around Haytor), archaeology, land use, landscape setting for famous English literature (e.g. Sherlock Holmes & The Hound of the Baskervilles), draw parallels with other literary works. Visit Widdicombe-in-the-moor village.
Day 4: Thursday 24th June
- AM: Boscastle village, northeast Cornwall, scene of 1 in 400-yr. flash-flood event, August 2004.
- PM: Clovelly village (northwest Devon), history/management AND/OR Woolacombe Bay, beach geomorphology, tourism.
Day 5: Friday 25th June
- AM/PM: East Prawle (southwest Devon), circular 12 km coastal hike to Start Point, see raised beaches, geomorphological relics of interglacial periods, Hallsands village, lost due to coastal (mis)management.
Day 6: Saturday 26th June
- AM/PM: Drive to Eastbourne, East Sussex. Visit Cuckmere Haven, coastal defence & managed realignment issues.
- PM: Birling Gap village, earth surface processes, beach geomorphology, dry valley formation, ongoing cliff erosion & emotive issue of disappearing village.
Day 7: Sunday 27th June
- AM/PM: Lewes, East Sussex – geomorphology and management of South Downs National Park, local history of the town, floods, avalanches and ‘Transition Town’ attempts to become carbon neutral, sample local beer (non-drivers).
- PM: Return Gatwick Airport: Tour ends ca. 16:30 hrs
