62142-01 - Forschungsseminar: Current topics in quantum and nanoelectronics 2 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2021
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Christian Schönenberger (christian.schoenenberger@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar entitled “Current Topics in Quantum- and Nanoelectronics” focuses on recent topics in quantum transport in electronics devices that make use of a nanomaterial and/or nanostructuring. As examples, the following recent topics have been discussed: twisted bilayer and flat bands in magic-angle graphene, Andreev / Yu-Shiba Rusinov versus Majorana bound states, Berry phases and topology in the solid-state (topologic insulator, topological superconductivity), quantum Hall physics, superconducting circuits, quantum bits: their realization and circuits for readout and operation, the principle of reflectometry, noise, Weyl and Dirac semimetals, quantum-dot physics, quantum coherence, spintronics and thermoelectric effects.
Lernziele The participant will be exposed to the current on-going research, the state-of-the-art and the most recent advancement in the field of quantum electronics. He or she will learn on how to capitalize from current research, how to read into and present a new topic to a research audience and how to deal with open questions. The discussion is an integral part of the seminar. The aim is here to lower the barrier as much as possible so that all participants dare to ask questions and learn by mutual exchange in the group.
Literatur current research publications in journals
Bemerkungen The course is done by weekly presentations and discussions. Every week one participant prepares one topic that is presented in a seminar talk lasting 45-60 minutes. This is followed by an in-depth discussion where all participants contribute. The whole course takes in total 2 x 45 Min.

Teilnahmebedingungen This seminar assume that participants are knowledgeable in condensed matter and quantum physics as taught in a physics curriculum. It can be selected after the bachelor or as a postgraduate course ideally for PhD students that must acquire credit points and work in the aera of quantum transport or a related field.

Leistungsüberprüfung Lehrveranst.-begleitend
Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung The course runs every semester. Participants can collect 2 credit points per semester. The credit points require the participants to be present weekly at the seminar, active involvement and by presenting one topical talk on a current topic (see content) defined in the seminar. This requires a considerable commitment since the preparation of a talk corresponds to a workload of up to one week.
