| Inhalt | What is the relationship between political power and political representation in Europe today and at which level of the policy-making environment do policies get shaped? Which stakeholders are involved in drafting, passing and implementing policies at European, national and sub-national level? What are the preferences and the constraints of the actors engaged in the policy process? What role does the European Union play in the whole policy process? The course provides analysis and aims to stimulate debates about key political processes in Europe, relating both to the 'project' of EU integration and to domestic policy challenges from the perspective of an evolving citizens – elected representative relationship. The seminar introduces comparative research on European Union countries relying on state-ofthe- art literature in the field. On the one hand, the course aims to familiarize students with classic texts and recent publications in comparative European politics. On the other hand, it will help students develop their own research paper. Students learn how to be effective participants in public policymaking as analysts, administrators, or advocates. By the end of the course, students should acquire analytical tools to analyze the political environment conducive to public policy in Europe. |
| Lernziele | - By the end of the course students will develop a better understanding of the political and social environment in which European policy-making takes place - Understand the linkages between the European and the national level of policy-making - Students will recognize competing interests of national and European level policy makers and how they contribute to policy-making in Europe. - Students will be able to engage in debates regarding the policy-making environment and to build their own theory-driven arguments about current affairs in Europe. - The course will help students improve their written and oral communication skills and to improve their analytical thinking. |

| Bemerkungen | All Seminars will be graded in the Department of Political Science. Grading scale 6.0 to 1.0, whereupon 4.0 is a pass. The number of participants is limited. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study. Priority will be given to students of Political Science and Sociology. Please take note: The first session of the seminar will be held via zoom on 24 September 2021. This session will serve as an information session for all interested students. Please take not that you will have to decide at the end of this session whether you will continue with the seminar for the rest of the term. Since we have only a limited number of places due to Corona restrictions, we want to make sure that places in the seminar are not blocked by people who will not take part for the full semester. If there are more students than places in this first session, we will distribute the places according the date of registration to the course in Mona. As of the second session we will conduct the sessions in-person according to the current Corona rules. |

| Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | All Seminars will be graded in the Department of Political Science. Grading scale 6.0 to 1.0, whereupon 4.0 is a pass. The grade for the class will be calculated according to the following three components: 1. Class participation: - You are expected to do the readings before each class and to prepare two questions about the material in advance. - These questions will be uploaded before each day of the course in the online folder on Adam. 2. Class presentation: - Class presentations will be distributed in the first session of the class. - You are expected to present part of the material for class and to showcase some exercises that are available online. 3. Final essay: - You are expected to write an essay on a topic of your choice that is discussed in the course. The presentation and the paper can (but do not need to) be on the same topic. Requirements for the essay: 2000 words (+/- 10%), 1.5 spaced, Times New Roman. The document will be titled firstname.lastname.EUpolitics.pdf. - Please be aware that plagiarism is intellectual fraud and not tolerated.
