| Inhalt | This course uses philosopher Miranda Fricker’s book Epistemic Injustice as a starting point to explore knowledge production in African Studies. According to Fricker, there are two kinds of epistemic injustice: testimonial injustice, which involves issues of credibility (for example, like when the police don’t believe someone because they are black); and hermeneutic injustice, which involves gaps in interpretive frameworks (for example, when someone experiences sexual harassment in a culture that doesn’t have a critical concept for it). We’ll work through the book together and each student is expected to bring a topic or issue that they want to investigate so that we have a range of case studies for exploring the politics of knowledge production. We’ll also engage with literatures that offer some tools to transcend these injustices because the goal of the course is to collectively interrogate biases in knowledge systems, and to practically imagine ways of overcoming these biases. MA students in African Studies are the target, but students from all disciplines are welcome. |
