59839-01 - Praktikum: Measurement, Control & Acquisition 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2022
Angebotsmuster Jedes Frühjahrsem.
Dozierende Martino Poggio (martino.poggio@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The purpose of this course is to teach students the practical aspects of measurement, control and data acquisition. These are critical components of any modern experiment, especially in experimental physics laboratories. The technological development in the recent years made equipment such as microcontrollers, computers and sensors available for the mass market, that are designed for do-it-yourself experiments that can be taken out at home. This allows to do typical lab tasks with equipment that is accessible to everybody, which is why the single-board computer Raspberry Pi and Arduino microcontroller boards are used in this course. Subjects such as analog-to-digital conversion, sensor read-out, robotics and aspects of control theory in form of a PID loop will be addressed.
A major part of the course is to get basic knowledge in the programming language Python, which will be used to perform the tasks and experiments in the course. Python is a high-level programming language, comparably easy to learn and widely used in the scientific community, and hence its mastery is a very useful skill for anyone interested in working in an experimental physics laboratory.
