| Inhalt | Modern banking has evolved over 300 years, acquiring a crucial role in the functioning of the global economy. Banks solve several fundamental problems that emanate because of informational asymmetries, mismatched maturity profile of savers and consumers, and contracting issues of several kinds. Therefore, banks serve the economy by providing maturity transformation, payment services, risk management and information processing through monitoring and screening. Fintechs are disrupting many of these functions of the banks. In addition, by entering into financial services, the already established technology companies—called Bigtech—are challenging bank business models. Fintech revolution is built on the back of technological innovation of very wide variety covering big data processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital ledger technology. Using both theoretical and empirical tools, in this course, we will look deep into the roles that banks perform, and try to understand what makes banks special. Where and how do banks bring about efficiency gains? Where do they lack? We will then look at the technological innovations brought about by Fintechs. We will then try to understand to what extent Fintech and Bigtech will substitute banks and, where they will complement them. We will also learn to apply machine-learning methods on data relating to banks and fintechs. |
| Lernziele | The course consists of lectures, student presentations with disucssions, and guest lectures. Lecturer discusses some key theoretical and empirical papers in banking and Fintech. Students will be assigned either academic papers or case studies for presentation that will require them to develop these ideas further. Students will also pick an essay topic from the list of topics (or be able to formulate one themselves). Essays can be theoretical or empirical in nature. Students can access extensive databases on banks and fintechs that we have collected. They can also use other data on banks and Fintech available to them publicly or through university subscription. In the middle of the semester, each student (or group) will discuss their essay topic and a roadmap on how to work on their topic, with the lecturer. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Students enrolled in the Master of Business and Economics must have acquired at least 12 ECTS from the following list of courses of the Master’s program: Game Theory, Econometrics, Theory of the Firm, Econometrics, Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Advanced Mathematics for Economics, Advanced Empirical Finance, contract theory/contest theory. Students enrolled in the Master of International and Monetary Economics must have acquired at least 12 ECTS from the modules Advanced Topics in Economics or Core Areas in Monetary Economics offered by University of Basel, or from the modules Introduction, Core Module, or specialization Finance, Financial Institutions and Regulations offered by Uni Bern. Master students enrolled in other programs, and students who do not fulfill these requirements are requested to ask for permission before enrolling. |
