70656-01 - Seminar: Getting Started: Orientation and Core Skills for a Successful PhD 1 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Dorothee Bentz (dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The workshop will be given by Dr. Dorothée Bentz, Program coordinator and lecturer in the PhD program Health & Interventions, Faculty of Psychology, Adjunct Senior Scientist at the Division of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Basel and Supervisor and Psychotherapist in a private practice.

The workshop is aimed at PhD students of the PhD program Health & Interventions who are in the first or second semester of their PhD studies. The workshop is divided into two main parts: Orientation and Basic Skills Development. In the first part, PhD students will first reflect on what motivated them to pursue their PhD. Then, they will explore their strengths and areas of development, and plan concrete next steps to foster further development. In this context, doctoral students will learn about the offers and resources of the University of Basel as well as some non-university offers that are helpful in carrying out their individual PhD projects, academic duties or for developing scientific skills. This also includes getting to know the general structure of the University of Basel, their bodies of self-administration and offices, as well as relevant regulations and guidelines for PhD students and researchers in general. In the second part, the PhD students engage in developing a timeline for their PhD studies and develop a rough sketch of their projects and publications, as well as the collaborators and institutions necessary to succeed in conducting their PhD projects. In addition, PhD students learn about opportunities to become actively involved in the scientific community and gain an insight into the possibilities of networking and communicating their science to the public and at scientific conferences. They learn about pitfalls in structuring their PhD studies, and fulfilling all obligatory requirements to obtain a PhD at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Basel.

The workshop will be highly interactive, the participating PhD students will work on their own material and must be prepared to reflect on and share their personal motivations, values and goals in relation to their PhD studies.
