Inhalt | This course addresses ethical quandaries associated with private and institutional collecting and histories of repatriation. It aims to guide students in developing a sturdy understanding of the ethical considerations involved in collecting and displaying artefacts. In the second phase of the course, students will become acquainted with ongoing ethical dilemmas associated with conducting research through exhibition visits and interviews with professionals working actively in Material Culture studies, provenance research and museology. These will be followed by writing opinion pieces where students will critique and contextualize historical collections and displays through their encounters with texts, exhibitions, and experts. |
Lernziele | Students will: - Learn about ethical issues in contemporary museums and innovative approaches to material culture studies, museum curation and collaboration. - Become familiar with histories and various theoretical approaches to studying material culture and provenance research. - Understand suitable written and verbal communication for relevant professional and academic purposes in dealing with collections through coursework. Cultivate skills in critical reading, research, and writing. Work collaboratively in team-based learning. Interpret and work with ethical frameworks to moral problems encountered in research. Explore prevailing ethical challenges in research and proffer options for resolving them. |
Teilnahmebedingungen | The number of participants is limited to 25 people. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study. Priority will be given to the subjects listed under "modules". |

Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | Course Requirements - Regular attendance and active participation in class. - Critical reading response + presentations. Presentations will NOT consist of highlights of the texts alone. Students will draw upon references mentioned within the text or introduce a scenario of their choice related to the overarching theme(s) of the text. - Exhibition review, two pages. - “Dear Curator”, a 3-page opinion piece. |
