Bemerkungen | Because of unforeseen changes in the instructor's physical presence in Basel, some meetings will be held in person (S 11 in WWZ), other meetings online (via Zoom). Here is the schedule: meetings in physical presence (S 11): 05 March, 12 March, 26 March, 07 May, 14 May, 28 May; online meetings (via Zoom): 02 April, 09 April, 16 April, 23 April, 30 April. During the first meetings (March 2024), the instructor will give an overall presentation of organisational theory as applied to higher education and discuss the topics to be treated by the students in their individual presentations, which will be held during April 2024. The final meetings (May 2024) will be devoted to the group presentations of the three business models. Ideally, the language of the colloquium is English. If, however, all participants turn out to be more fluent in German, the colloquium can of course be held in German. |

Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | (1) Individual presentation on one of the following topics: (a) Governance of higher education: differences between public and private funding, autonomy of institutional policies. (b) Strategy: who definies the institutional strategy and how? Who is accountable for it and which incentives/sanctions are in place? (c) Organizational structure: role of faculties, departments, institutes. (d) What is the role of the faculty and of the administration in defining the institutional agenda of a university? (e) University leadership: ownership vs. management, modes of election, top-down vs. bottom-up leadership, internal vs. external preferences. (f) Educational models: stress on formation and/or research, focus on undergraduate vs. graduate education. (g) Globalization vs. local orientation in higher education. How does the university address a global audience? Advantages and disadvantages of international investments, franchising, etc. The individual presentation will count 1/3 of the final grade. (2) Group presentation (3-4 students per group) on a business model for a new university on the basis of a predefined set of parameters. The group presentation will count 1/3 of the final grade. (3) Active particupation in the Colloquium (questions, comments, etc.) will count 1/3 of the final grade. |
