11861-01 - Vorlesung: Forschungsmethoden II: quantitativ 6 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2008
Angebotsmuster Jedes Frühjahrsem.
Dozierende Sabina M. De Geest (sabina.degeest@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This advanced quantitative research methods and mixed methods course builds on the first semester courses. The aims are:
1) to develop a common understanding of research terminology
2) to describe and compare multiple research designs, sampling strategies and measurement methods for their strengths and limitations relative to the goals of the research
3) to practice the application of selected methods to empirical research problems
The course readings range from basic texts used in the first semester courses to more advanced readings and exercises.
A lecture-seminar-workshop format will be used. The time allocated to each format will vary from session to session. Students will be responsible for participation in class discussions and for completing selected exercises.
The class will be divided in 2 groups for the seminar. The groups will be constant in composition, yet will alternate in who will supervise them. The students are responsible to build their own 2 subgroups at the start of the semester and provide SDG with a list of names belonging to each group.
This is not a statistics course. The application of statistical procedures are discussed only where their inclusion is needed to understand a methodological procedure. In such situations, the conceptual meaning is emphasized rather than the calculation of statistical techniques. Examples will be introduced that show the unique design features to be considered in the planning and stages of a study so that specific methods can be employed during the analysis.
Similarly, the use of computers in data analysis, while recognized as a vital skill, is not emphasized here. The former work will be more extensively covered in statistics courses, a number of advanced analytical procedures and discussions on their appropriateness relative to the various research designs will be introduced.
Lernziele - Compare and contrast various research designs to identify their strengths, limitations, and appropriateness to answer the research question(s).
- Propose strategies for enhancing the strength of various quantitative research methods: designs, sampling methods, measurement, data collection.
- Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of different measurement methods.
- Understand diagnostic testing principles
- Understand the basic principles of validity and reliability in measurement.
- Understand the underlying principles of power analysis / sample calculation
- Understand the different phases of data collection and data management processes
- Critique quantitative research methods used in selected research studies.
- Understand the basic principles of mixed methods
- Critique methods used in mixed methods research
