| Inhalt | Culture is a loosely defined subject in the social sciences and probably also the most central concept in 20th century anthropology. Since Talcott Parsons distinction of three independent levels of social analysis in the 1950s - social structure, culture, and personality -, culture is usually understood as the sphere of symbols, basic convictions and meaning by which a society gives sense to its own life-world. Introduced into social anthropology by Clifford Geertz in the 1960s, the notion of culture as a semiotic system influenced a wide range of empirical studies of culture and culture change. This change is often characterized as "negotiation" between actors. However, the metaphor seems to lead to a one-sided understanding of culture as "text". The work of the anthropologist is then described as a translation of culture as meaning into his or her own language. The concept of negotiation also privileges a harmonic and "meaningful" interaction between social actors. More recent studies have shown, however, that culture is also a contested site where strategic interaction may be as frequent as negotiation. Terms as "multiculturalism, politics of belonging, identity and representation", among others, all point towards a shift in scholarly attention: The semiotic concept of culture is giving way to a pluralized and more political understanding of the culture game. This seminar tries to trace the debate since the mid 20th century. It starts with a reading of basic theoretical texts and then analyses how the interpretation of culture has changed over the past decades. Case studies mainly come from Africa, but influential studies from other parts of the world are also addressed. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Studierende im BA erst ab dem 5. Semester. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist beschränkt, die Plätze werden nach Anmeldedatum und Studienfachzugehörigkeit vergeben. Vorrang haben die Studierenden der Ethnologie, Gesellschaftswissenschaften und African Studies. Falls noch freie Plätze vorhanden, so werden diese nach Anmeldedatum vergeben. Eine Anmeldeliste hängt im Ethnologischen Seminar aus. |
