| Inhalt | The question of whether there we can think without language, and if language determines the way we think is an old one, but is addressed with new methods in current research in linguistic typology and anthropology. We will focus on research on typological differences in encoding spatial relations and how they affect language acquisition, deptiction of events in litature and translations, and nonverbal tasks. It will be shown how languages can be very different in how they talk about space, and how this affects memory and representation. |
| Lernziele | Students learn about the basic parameters of encoding spatial relations in language, and the linguistic classifications of such systems. They will then become familiar with different methods of tracing differences in the spatial semantic system to other aspects of cognition. Finally, they learn to apply this crosslinguistically. |
