| Inhalt | African music has inspired many composers, a prominent example being György Ligeti who extended the dense textures of Central African polyphonic techniques by drawing out acoustically produced 'inherent rhythms' in the context of Western musical instruments. While such flirtations of Western composers with African music and other 'exotic idioms' has received much attention, the same is not the case with art music from Africa. In this one-day course with Prof. Martin Scherzinger (Associate Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University) we discuss both examples of African art music and of European compositions borrowing from Africa. South African pianist Paul Hanmer, like Martin Scherzinger author of several contemporary South African compositions, will also be present in the course and presents some of his music for discussion and analysis by the group. The course will be taught as a one-day seminar on Saturday 9 May 2009. Attendance at the preparatory meeting on Wednesday 11 March 2009, 12h15-13h45 and at the public lecture of Prof. Scherzinger for the Swiss Musicological Society is mandatory. Each student write an essay and will present his findings with a short oral presentation during the seminar. |
