22868-01 - Seminar: Urban Sociology in Africa 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2009
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Elisio Macamo (elisio.macamo@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar introduces students to key approaches in urban sociology and seeks to make them relevant to the study and analysis of urban life forms and structures in Africa. The seminar starts with a historical overview which centres on the contributions of Max Weber and Georg Simmel and how these were taken up by the Chicago School of sociology to build an impressive conceptual and theoretical apparatus that informed sociological theory over many decades. The seminar then discusses major theoretical approaches in urban sociology and articulates them with issues in macro-sociology, especially as these refer to the ways in which aspects of social life in non-Western societies have been studied. Finally, the seminar considers empirical literature on urban life in Africa and discusses it with reference to the analytical concerns of urban sociology.
Lernziele At the end of the seminar students should be acquainted with the (i) central themes of urban sociology in the perspective of the classics, (ii) the main theoretical approaches and the way they can be deployed to describe and analyze urban life forms and (iii) how to apply these to an understanding of the theoretical and methodological challenges posed by African urban forms.
