| Inhalt | 'Production concentrates in big cities, leading provinces, and wealthy nations. But economic concentration leaves out some popuations. More than two thirds of the developing worlds poor live in villages. A billion people are living in the poorest ad most isolated nations, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Central Asia, survive on less that 2 percent of the worlds wealth. These disadvantaged people cope every day with the reality that development does not bring economic prosperity everywhere at once: markets favor some places over others. But dispersing production more broadly does not necessarily foster prosperity. Getting the benefits of both economic concentration and social convergence requires policy actions aimed at economic integration.' (The World Bank 2009). Based on the World Bank Development Report 2009 this course analyzes promising approaches to urbanization, regional integration, territorial development, institutional cooperation and strategies to integrate the poor into balanced growth and development. Part I Seeing development in three dimensions 1. Density Economic concentration, convergence, implications for development Distance Economic concentration in leading areas, divergence, and lagging areas 2. Division Geography, globalization and development Part II Shaping Economic Geography 3. Scale Economies and Agglomeration portfolio of places and market forces 4. Factor Mobility and Migration differents paths of capitalism, labor mobility and managing integration Part III Reframing the Policy Debates 5. Concentration without Congestion Policies for Inclusive urbanization 6. Unity, not Uniformity Effective Appraoches to territorial development 7. Winners without borders Integrating the poor countries with world market 8. Lessons to be learned |
| Lernziele | Bildung von Arbeitsgruppen zu maximal drei Personen an der obligatorischen Vorbereitungssitzung. Jede Arbeitsgruppe bearbeitet ein Thema, übernimmt die Leitung einer Sitzung und der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion. Präsentationen sind professionell vorzubereiten und durchzuführen. Es sind eigene Fragestellungen und Thesen zu den Themen zu entwickeln, eigene Recherchen anzustellen und die Fragestellungen wie auch Fallbeispiele wohl dokumentiert aufzubereiten. Die Seminarteilnehmer werden gebeten, die Hinweise zum Abfassen von Seminararbeiten am Geographischen Institut Basel (Internet) zu beachten. |
