| Inhalt | This seminar looks at recent trends in anthropological theory and methodology. Since the crisis of representation in social anthropology slowly faded out in the early 1990s, anthropological writing has tried to adopt a wide variety of old, renewed and new perspectives on its subject. Though it is difficult to identify clear and cohesive trends, some themes and approaches became more influential than others. The seminar first starts with the heritage of the crisis of the 1980s and asks how and to what degree has anthropology acknowledged the criticism of its empirical basis, in particular the methodology of participant observation as it was once stated by Bronislaw Malinowski in the introduction to his seminal work on the Trobriand Islanders. What are the advantages and the disadvantages of new trends as they were claimed in the 1990s by scholars as George Marcus and Michael Fischer? Can they cope with the changing life-world in times of globalisation? The second half of the seminar is dedicated to recent trends in the theoretical conceptualization of the social world and in particular of the rapid processes of societal change that inform our time. It starts with Anthony Giddens theory of structuration and then goes through a series of theoretical approaches that all try to make sense of what is commonly called globalisation. The seminar finally addresses the question if globalisation is a phenomenon in itself or if it is not much more than a bunch of symptoms that do not need a new theory of social change. |
