Inhalt | Currently, the term "weak states" is used in an inflationary manner, mainly in conjunction with threats to global security. What, however, does the term mean? Is a weak state a failing state? Or does a weak state imply a strong society? In this seminar, the term "Weak state" shall be analysed from a sociological perspective, seeking i) to identify and critically discuss the characteristics of weak states as defined in literature, and ii) examine "weak states" in terms of their strength to (re)produce particular power relations and how they shape and are shaped by particular (state and non-state) actors. The seminar will be using case-studies from African states as an empirical frame of reference, examining the developmental implications of "weak states". |
Lernziele | I. A critical understanding of the context, defiinition and use of the term of "weak states" II. A thorough understanding of the politics of so-called "weak states" III. An understanding of the implications in terms of the dynamics of state-society relationships. |
