| Inhalt | This course aims to bring together two highly relevant perspectives on politics and social change in Africa. The first is an institutional approach that has gained traction under buzzwords such as good governance or political economy. Here, the institutional conditions of a state acting in the public interest are explored; evidently, this also includes the exploration of institutional configurations which lead to dysfunctional public institutions and short-term, exploitative or ineffective policies. The second approach, often disregarded in above strand, is an actor-centered perspective. Of key interest here are the political and social spaces that individual and collective actors shape in response to and in active engagement with their environment. The advantage of this perspective is the identification of actors and processes through which social change is actually effected in specific contexts and time-scapes. The currently most exciting contributions on politics in Africa are grappling with a more integrated and empirically grounded approach that captures both the dynamism and contextualization of an actor-centered approach, as well as the more generalisable findings of an institutional approach. This course seeks to provide an overview over the most important contributions, and discuss them with reference to current political struggles in Eastern Africa. |

| Bemerkungen | The seminar will be held in English. Essay can be written either in English or German. Mit einem Essay von ca. 5-6 Seiten kann 1 zusätzlicher Kreditpunkt erworben werden. Diese Zusatzleistung ist unabhängig des von der Dozentin als Leistungsnachweis verlangten Essays zu erbringen und dafür ist im Voraus ein Learning Contract auszustellen. |
