| Inhalt | The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to approaches in the social sciences that engage critically with development policy and institutions. To this end the course will initially address the question concerning the theoretical and conceptual status of the field of development studies in order to raise issues pertaining to the relationship between theory and practice. Drawing on the raised issues the course will move on to discuss the various ways in which social scientists have engaged with the notion of development and accompanying practice to enable students to gain insights into the complex nature of development both as intervention in human life-worlds as well as an intellectual challenge. The course will round up the issues with a general discussion on the theoretical and methodological challenges faced by the field of development studies in order to stimulate students interest in the further pursuit of the issues entailed in the critical appraisal of development. |
| Lernziele | Students - are familiar with critical approaches to development policy and practice; - are able to identify theoretical and conceptual problems associated with claims to knowledge made in the context of development studies; - know some of the major themes in the critique of development policy and practice. |
