| Inhalt | The today Etosha National Park is one of the biggest game reserves in Africa and Namibia's major tourist attraction. Its origins are in the early 20th century when the then colonial power Germany declared huge parts of the colony as game reserves. Next to game preservation the Etosha Game Reserve always served additional functions, i.e. as a buffer zone, as a border of settlement, to control mobility, and as a veterinary as well as a military border. In addition the game reserve became of increasing importance for the self-representation of the colonial settler society. During the course we will explore aspects of the Etosha Game Reserve's history by using the rich primary and secondary sources held in the collections and archives of the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB). We will trace i.a. the changing extension of the reserve and its cartographical representation in the map collection, the reserve's establishment as a national monument in the personal papers collection, the reserve's varying visual representations in the photo and video collection, personal memories of the reserve in the audio collection, and the legal aspects of the reserve's role for veterinary and mobility control in the holdings of the library. In addition, a "safari" to the Basel Zoo will give a sense of the public staging and representation of the Etosha reserve in a postmodern European city. Through the example of the Etosha Game Reserve the participants will get a first hand experience of working with a variety of sources held in an archive/ documentation centre. The participants will get an understanding of the structure, richness and gaps of a post-colonial archive based outside the former colony. Language is English and/or German depending on the participants' skills. |
