25781-01 - Proseminar: Approaches to Citizenship and Nationhood in Africa 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2010
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Henri Yere (henri.yere@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt In this course, we want to explore the many facets of citizenship as a concept, with a special focus on the history of the concept in 20th Century Africa. A renewed interest in these questions has surfaced since the middle of the 1990s, especially after the publication of Mahmood Mamdani’s Citizen and Subject (1996). These debates are at the crossroads of many disciplines such as history, political science, social anthropology, sociology and law. While relying on many case studies to highlight different perspectives, the case of Côte d’Ivoire will figure prominently.
The course will be taught in English; a good knowledge of French will be an asset (but not a requirement.)
Lernziele The aim of this course is to introduce students to the current debates over the questions of nationhood, citizenship and belonging. While aiming at deepening the students’ theoretical knowledge on issues of citizenship and belonging, the course will also be an opportunity for them to gain critical skills in reading and interpreting historical documents.
