| Inhalt | In this course we will first focus on the similarities and differences in first and second language learning with special attention to the timing of acquisition (childhood bilingualism, later 2nd language acquisition) and the setting (tutored / untutored learning). The second focus will be on theories of language learning: Do we acquire a second language with the same learning mechanisms as our first language? Is there a critical period for second language learning? Is transfer from the first language positive or detrimental to language learning? Students will benefit from attending my lecture Spracherwerb (Friday 10-12h) in parallel. |
| Lernziele | Second language learning is much harder to study and to explain than first language learning because there are many more variables that affect the course of learning. In this seminar students will become familiar with the types of language learning and L2 theories. They learn to disentangle the various research questions and theories and the hypotheses that follow from them in order to critically assess the empirical evidence available. |
