| Inhalt | The built features in the world are constitutive of our being-in-the-world. The course Anthropology of the Built Environment engages with this object of study which has always been important in social anthropology, for instance in the study of material culture and in the nature/culture debate, but which has experienced renewed interest recently from different theoretical perspectives. In this course, we explore, among other things, how built environment constitutes social relationships, how people shape the environment and how perceptions of the environment influence our actions. To do so, we look at very concrete features in the world such as houses, roads, electricity and borders. The question at the centre of our discussions will be how to bring together a notion of agency and the built environment without losing out on an ethnographic, phenomenological understanding of how we are in the world and what shapes our practices. This question has become more important recently as scholars drop the nature/culture, internal/external, people/things dichotomies and call for new ontologies to explain the human-induced environmental changes around the world, the so-called “anthropocene”. We thus critically examine these new ways of doing anthropology in, of and on the (built) environment. The course also encourages students to explore methodologies such as drawing as a tool for cognition. |
