| Inhalt | Proseminar II will introduce Bachelor students to the core empirical methods of cultural anthropology. They will be engaged in the design and realization of a research project, including data collection and analysis. The course will be in English but some readings will be in German. All the papers can be written in German. The organizing theme revolves around the sites and spaces of social interactions, focusing in particular on the divide commonly drawn between “online” and “offline” realms. In contemporary society, the daily lives of a vast number of people takes place both in cyberspace and in the good old face-to-face physical world. We inhabit both of these spaces simultaneously by participating in a myriad of different sites. As cyberspace and ITC (Information and Communication Technology) represents a significant part of our daily experiences, empirical research in cultural anthropology must account for such growing influences and practices in our lives. In these times, empirical research is not only taking place in various physical settings due to human mobility and the complexity of the interconnections that define our contemporary societies, but research also often extends to online spaces and practices. More often than not, ethnographic research must indeed account for interactions, influences and practices that are taking place online through ITC (whether on websites, messaging apps, forums, online communities or interest groups). As a result, ethnographers should mobilize methodologies and tools that are useful to comprehend complex realities and dynamics that are spreading across the online/offline divide. While introducing the core methodological tools for empirical research in cultural anthropology (such as developing a research question, mapping and delineating the research field, observing, describing, designing and conducting interviews and participant observation, etc.), this Proseminar will also present current reflexions on what digital ethnography is and what its methodological specificities are. Students will be asked to design their own research project step by step during the semester. This hands on approach will focus on questions, practices and social interactions that stretch across online and offline spheres to analyze how people act and regard their experiences in these two very different realms. Therefore, students will be asked to conduct research that combines both digital ethnography and offline empirical research on their chosen research question. Ultimately, the Proseminar II aims to explore how digital ethnography and its methods can (or should) contribute to contemporary anthropological research. |
| Lernziele | Proseminar II aims to introduce the basic methodological tools and techniques for ethnographic research to undergraduate students and engage them in their first empirical research exercise, including digital ethnography. |
| Literatur | A references list (in English and German) will be distributed at the beginning of the semester and the core texts will be online on ADAM. |
| Bemerkungen | Bemerkungen Participation in a methodological/empirical seminar (Proseminar II) is a mandatory requirement for Bachelor basic studies. |
| Teilnahmebedingungen | Die Teilnehmerzahl ist aus Gründen der Qualitätssicherung auf 40 beschränkt. Die Teilnehmenden werden nach Fachrichtung, Studiengang und in der Reihenfolge ihrer Anmeldung auf die Liste gesetzt. Wer im Rahmen von Auslandaufenthalten und von Austauschprogrammen in Basel studiert wird unabhängig vom Listenplatz immer aufgenommen. |
| Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung | Inscription through MONA, questions can be forwarded to david.bozzini@unibas.ch or during office hours (Wed 14-16). Lehrveranstaltungen mit beschränkter Teilnehmerzahl können ab 01.02.2017 bis 15.02.2017 über MOnA belegt werden. Die Zuteilung erfolgt durch die Dozierenden. Bis 18.02.2016 erhalten alle definitiv aufgenommenen Studierenden eine Bestätigungsmail des Dozierenden. Wer an der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung dennoch unentschuldigt fehlt, wird von der Liste gestrichen. In der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung oder per Mail in der Woche der ersten Sitzung erfahren Studierende auf einer Warteposition, ob sie doch teilnehmen können. |

| Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | Students are expected to complete the readings before each session and to actively participate in classroom discussions. They will prepare short papers and exercises during the semester that will help formulate the students’ own empirical research. At the end of the semester, students will be expected to compose their Proseminar II final paper in German (Proseminararbeit II). |
