40028-01 - Vorlesung: Provincializing Europe: Orientalism and Decolonization seen from a contemporary perspective 2 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Teresa Pullano (teresa.pullano@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This lecture deals with two interconnected questions:
1. The link between Europe's colonial past and todays' processes of integration and disintegration at the level of the European Union;
2. The relationship between the construction of the non-European as the irreducible figure of alterity and the building of a European identity under conditions of globalization.

This lecture looks at this two questions through and empirical and a theoretical analysis. On the empirical level, the lecture examines the connections between processes of colonization and decolonization and the project of the European Union: which are the genealogical and the historical links between these two processes? Is the EU an answer to decolonization? And if yes, in which ways? What are the links between migration flows towards Europe at present at the colonial empires? Another question this lecture asks is weather the ways in which EU law functions at the supranational level has similarities with the functioning of multiple and overlapping legal regimes during colonial empires. And if the answer is positive, what are the consequences for the place that the EU occupies within the legal and economic network of contemporary globalization.

The lecture takes into account contemporary struggles for political and social rights in the Arab world, in the Africas, in the Americas and in the Asias. What is the link between these struggles for rights and for political autonomy and the anticolonial movements of the past?

Finally, the lecture combines the political and legal empirical questions with a theoretical problématique. In 2000, Dipesh Chakrabarty's Provincializing Europe was published, making postcolonial studies an unavoidable reference. Fifteen years later, in a time of profound crisis for the Western world, what is left of Chakrabarty's claim concerning the provincialization of European thought? Are the key categories of Western thought, such as the ones of the nation and of the political subject, still functioning through the orientalization of the non-European?
