Inhalt This seminar is addressed to both students of the Law Faculty and to students who do not have a previous legal knowledge of the topic. The seminar will provide students with a comprehensive and articulated understanding of the legal framework concerning EU citizenship, free movement and third-country nationals migration to the EU. The seminar is divided into six parts. The first part covers the law relating to the free movement of EU citizens and their families. The course then explores the entry of non-EU (third country) nationals and aspects of the external borders control. The third part analyzes the legal migration of third country nationals including long-term residents, economic migrants and family members. Then, the seminar focuses on the common EU Asylum system. The fifth part deals with issues of irregular migration. Finally, the seminar examines the role of human rights provisions for the EU Immigration and Asylum Law.
The seminar replaces EU law within a historico-political and socio-economic framework, thus allowing to understand the context and the political forces behind different phases of EU free movement and migration policies over time.
Lernziele The main objectives of the seminar are:

- Acquiring a knowledge and an understanding oft he EU legal framework concerning free Movement of EU citizens, third country nationals right of entry, residence and circulation within the EU and understanding the EU asylum policy.

- Understanding the historico-political development of the EU migration and asylum policy.

- Improving the capacity to read contemporary phenonema concerning migration through the EU legal framework.

- Reading and understanding judgments of the European Court of Justice and of the Europea Court of Human Rights concerning EU citizens and third country nationals rights to free movement and entry into the EU.

- Connecting the EU legal framework for circulation and migration to the development of socio-economic policies within the EU.

Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung Participants are required to submit a written report on the seminar topic, present a talk on the topic, and participate actively in the seminar discussions. These three aspects will be individually graded on a scale of 1.0-6.0 and the overall grade oft he seminar will be determined as a weighted average of the three components.
