46738-01 - Seminar: Business Ethics as Risk Management 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Christoph Lucas Zapf (lucas.zapf@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Shaping the future under the paradigm of sustainability means in a broad sense: Current and coming action is adapted to prevent future risks for humanity. For economic actors, this understanding of sustainability is of key relevance: To modify behavior in order to prevent undesirable outcomes, be they economic, social or ecological, is a prominent part of risk management.

Sustainability is our starting point for analyzing ethical challenges for economic actors: Value changes and a lack of social legitimacy are risks for businesses that can be mitigated by counteracting economic externalities with ethical and sustainable action. The social ‘license to operate’ is closely linked to perceptions of a company as ‘ethical’ or ‘sustainable’. We will explore what aspects of risk management are ethically relevant, and what the management of ethical risk entails.

In this course, we take a descriptive position. The aim is to understand business ethics as a social practice and describe the normative implications of the various forces and interests connected. The course will give an overview on related theories (risk management, business ethics classics, cultural sensitivity of economics) as well as develop case studies to research the implementation and consequences of the theoretical ideas in practice.
Lernziele - Knowledge and instruments to analyze business ethics as a social practice, understand underlying influences and their embeddedness;

- Know about interrelations between Sustainability, Business, Risk Management and Ethics;

- Work successfully on cases implementing the theoretical results of the course.
