| Inhalt | In this Proseminar, we critically examine the recent and rapidly growing anthropological scholarship on humanitarianism. “Doing good” is complicated; it happens with certain intentions and within specific contexts, and the perspectives of the different actors involved (aid workers, recipients, donor agencies, government officials, international organizations, etc.) rarely match. We look at the fundamental assumptions and criticisms of humanitarianism, the ways in which such practices are embedded in a long history of north/south relations and the manner in which they currently re-shape relationships between the global North and the global South. |
| Bemerkungen | During the first two weeks of the term, there are no sessions. The Proseminar starts on March 14th. To compensate for the two sessions, there will be a blocked course of three sessions on April 25th (ordinary Tuesday session plus 4 additional hours) from 12.15 to 17.45 hrs. Ideally, students attend the two proseminars "Humanitarianism" and "Introduction to Legal Anthropology" (Sandra Staudacher) offered by the Seminar of Social Anthropology since the two proseminars will in some way relate to each other. This is not mandatory, though. |
