46864-01 - Seminar: Secondary Cities 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Lucy Koechlin (lucy.koechlin@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Why 'secondary' cities? What even are secondary cities? What may sound like a dry term is, on the contrary, alive and kicking and highly dynamic. There has been a lot of attention paid to capital cities in Africa, in particular to sprawling urban centres such as Lagos or Johannesburg. The focus on the metropolis is attractive because of the extremes that they invoke, from abject poverty to ubiquitous creativity to overwhelming sensory experience. In addition, capital cities in Africa have historically been the centres of administrative, political and economic power, magnetically attracting people from the rural "hinterland". However, the urban landscape in Africa is changing dramatically. For a whole host of reasons, so-called secondary or mid-sized cities are growing rapidly, both in terms of size as well as in terms of their importance. This makes them an urgent and exciting focus of anthropology, for secondary cities are fast becoming tropes of new social, economic and political articulations. In this seminar, we will be looking into what 'makes' a secondary city; what makes it specifically urban, rather than just a large settlement; what national, regional and global processes affect and are affected by the transformation of secondary cities; what these new and emerging spaces look like, and what they can tell us about the way in which people relate to each other, what horizons and aspirations and practices they enact.
Lernziele 1. An understanding of constitutive features of urbanity.
2. An understanding of current empirical processes shaping and being shaped by secondary cities in Africa.
3. An understanding of interpretative methodologies capturing urbanity.
