Inhalt | In contrast to common anthropological approaches, a phenomenological anthropology does not begin its investigation with language, symbols or discourse. It begins with the 'imponderabilia' of everyday life, the taken-for-granted 'world of experience' or 'lifeworld' in which life is lived through the body and with the senses, in direct engagement with the constituents of the world. As an anthropological project, it is not just interested in these 'experiences' per se but also how they are constituted and shaped by sociocultural practices. In this seminar we familiarize ourselves with the 'theory' of phenomenology (especially the works of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger), phenomenologically-inspired fieldwork and issues of ethnographic description and representation. We do so by reading a selected range of phenomenological ethnographies and by some practical exercises. |
Lernziele | - Understand the key ideas in phenomenological anthropology - Know and understand some key studies in the field - Being able to apply the key ideas to methodological issues - Being able to address phenomenological challenges of ethnographic representation |
