Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Fiona Siegenthaler (fiona.siegenthaler@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The Crisis of Representation and the Writing Culture debate in the 1970s and 1980s represented a key moment in postcolonial and postmodern social and cultural anthropology, and they continue to shape contemporary thinking and writing in the discipline. The reflection and theorizing of representation has had an impact on every aspect of ethnography and cultural theory; including a reconsideration of intersubjectivity and epistemology in general. Representation was discovered as both, an unavoidable and a highly powerful practice, leading to fundamental questions with regard to ethnographic and anthropological methodology, epistemology and even its actual raison d’être.
In the research seminar ‘Representation and social anthropology: Readings in post-colonial and recent theory’, we read key texts of the debate in cultural anthropology and beyond, teasing out their respective authors’ notions and concepts of representation and their implications for a reflexive anthropological theory and methodology.
Lernziele - Students know the most relevant approaches to representation in anthropology in the last 40 years in theoretical as well as methodological and historical perspective.
- Students are able to read theoretical texts thoroughly and critically, to summarize the core arguments in their own language and with visual means, and critically engage with them, developing their own reflections and positions.
- Students master the skills of analyzing, comparing and bringing texts into a dialectical conversation, producing new knowledge and insights.

Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung All students participate regularly at the weekly sessions and read the mandatory texts. This reading is fundamental because they serve as a basis for the joint analysis, discussion and reflection in class. The research seminar assumes a strong intrinsic motivation and active preparation of all participating students in every session. Additionally, every student will be allocated an ‘expert’ role for selected texts/sessions, presenting a visual summary of the core aspects to the peers for discussion. We will work in a collaborative manner in a workshop-like setting to understand the texts, find their potentials and discover their weaknesses and surging questions. In each session, a participating student will make minutes, summarizing the core insights, points of debate and open questions.
Students are asked to miss no more than a maximum of 3 sessions. Regular attendance and active participation earn a pass and 3 ECT points for the course. Optional seminar thesis’ are credited with additional 5 ECT points and marked (1-6).

Seminar thesis:
Students wishing to write a seminar thesis are requested to inform the lecturer as early as possible, ideally before the beginning of the semester.
